Daishu Ma is a self-trained illustrator from Chengdu, China.
Like many city kids of her generation, Daishu’s traditional art education fell to the background of capitalist academic pressures, from which she went on to complete a business degree in the UK. Later retuning to her childhood passion, Daishu studied at the prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, followed by a journey of self-education and exploration reaching out beyond the bounds of institutionalised training.
Her visual narratives, evocative of the myth and fantasy of folklore and fairytales, are realised though a variety of traditional media, including wood engraving, paper art, pencil and ink. She has worked as a lecturer at Shanghai School of Visual Arts and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and currently one-half of trans-disciplinary design studio Alien and Monkey.
