Photosynthesis is the single most important chemical process on earth. Without it, the earth would look like Mars and life as we know it would never have existed. The first photosynthesizing organisms produced oxygen and turned a hostile and uninhabitable planet into a green world bursting with life, a world that we happily call home.
This book aims at giving a very visual introduction to how photosynthesis changed the world, revealing its importance and wonders through images and colour. It begins by tracing the history of photosynthesis back to its beginning, starting from its humble bacterial origins over 3.5 billion years ago, to the rise of oxygen and the making of coal, following on to the rise of animals, including us, whose survival depends on photosynthesis. It finishes by asking how our exploitation of the product of photosynthesis could potentially affect our future.
Each chapter presents a major evolutionary step in the history of photosynthesis. These microscopic adaptations are illustrated with all their biological details. The consequences of these revolutions are presented in double-spread illustrations, showing how the earth would have looked like in each of these key moments of its 4.5-billion-year long history.
